Host-derived Components

Host-derived components are molecules, cells, or structural materials produced by a biological host that contribute to the composition and function of tissues, organisms, or host-associated systems. They arise through processes such as biosynthesis, secretion, enzymatic processing, and cellular recruitment, and can influence signaling, barrier formation, adhesion, and interactions with neighboring organisms or materials. In biology, studying host-derived components helps clarify how organisms maintain homeostasis, respond to environmental challenges, and shape relationships with microbes, parasites, or transplanted materials. Their characterization also supports research in immunology, infectious disease, tissue engineering, and biomaterials by linking component origin to biological activity.

Extracting Host Cell Lysate from Infected Host Cells Cultured in a Permeable Membrane System

2025

This video demonstrates a permeable membrane insert system to investigate the impact of bacterial toxins on host cells in a controlled and isolated manner. This approach allows for the selective exposure of the cells to the toxins while maintaining a physical separation that mimics the natural host-pathogen interaction.

Generation of a Mouse Model of Experimental Cerebral Malaria Using Host Mosquito-Derived Sporozoites

2025

This video demonstrates the generation of an experimental mouse model of cerebral malaria. Sporozoites isolated from Plasmodium berghei-infected female mosquitoes are injected into a restrained mouse's tail veins, leading to blood-brain barrier disruption and brain inflammation, causing cerebral malaria. This infected mouse model offers a valuable tool to study in vivo microvascular pathology associated with cerebral malaria.

Major Components of the Light Microscope

2008

The light microscope is a basic tool for the cell biologist, who should have a thorough understanding of how it works, how it should be aligned for different applications, and how it should be maintained as required to obtain maximum image-forming capacity and resolution. The components of the microscope are described in detail here.

2023

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. The objective of this experiment is to achieve hands-on experience with different magnetic components from design and material perspectives. This experiment covers B-H curves of magnetic material and inductor design through identifying unknown design factors. The B-H curve of a magnetic element, such as an inductor or transformer, is a characteristic of the magnetic material forming the core around...

Protocols for Investigating the Host-tissue Distribution, Transmission-mode, and Effect on the Host Fitness of a Densovirus in the Cotton Bollworm

Here, we present a protocol to investigate the host-tissue distribution, transmission mode, and effect on the host fitness of a densovirus within a lepidopteran species, the cotton bollworm. This protocol can also be used for studying the interaction between other orally-transmitted viruses and their insect hosts.
