Inducible Genes

Inducible genes are genes whose expression is switched on only when particular signals or conditions require their products, allowing cells to conserve resources and respond to changing environments. Their regulation typically depends on an inducer that alters a repressor or activates a transcription factor, enabling RNA polymerase to initiate transcription at a regulated promoter. In biology, this control helps coordinate metabolism, stress responses, development, and cell signaling. Studying inducible gene systems clarifies how gene expression responds to environmental cues and supports applications such as controlled protein production, genetic circuits, and experimental regulation of cellular pathways.

2025

This video demonstrates the tetracycline, or Tet-On, gene expression system in a mouse model. In the presence of doxycycline, a tetracycline derivative, the Tet-On system consisting of reverse tetracycline-controlled transactivator protein becomes activated and expresses the gene of interest.

We present the detailed protocol for Agrobacterium-mediated virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) assay in cotton. The tobacco rattle virus (TRV)-derived VIGS vectors were deployed to induce RNA silencing of cotton GrCLA1, Cloroplastos alterados 1 gene. The albino phenotype caused by silencing GrCLA1 was observed at the seedling stage within 2 weeks after inoculation.

Source: Berens, C. et al. Applying an Inducible Expression System to Study Interference of Bacterial Virulence Factors with Intracellular Signaling. J. Vis. Exp. (2015)This video demonstrates the use of an inducible expression system to identify where the bacterial effector protein CaeB disrupts the host apoptotic cascade. It outlines the steps for transfecting CaeB-expressing cells with a tetracycline-responsive system to induce pro-apoptotic gene expression in order to identify the point of...
