Interscapular Bat

Interscapular brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a specialized fat depot positioned between the shoulder blades that generates heat and helps regulate whole-body energy balance. When cold or stimulated by sympathetic nerves, norepinephrine activates beta-adrenergic signaling in brown adipocytes, increasing mitochondrial respiration; uncoupling protein 1 then dissipates the proton gradient, releasing stored energy as heat rather than producing ATP. In biology, interscapular BAT provides a tractable model for studying non-shivering thermogenesis, cold adaptation, mitochondrial function, and metabolic disease. Research using this tissue helps clarify how thermogenic fat influences glucose and lipid metabolism and may inform strategies for treating obesity and related disorders.

Mammalian integument contains solvent-extractable lipids that can provide chemical compositions characteristic of individual species. This paper presents a routine method for separating broad lipid classes isolated from integumentary tissues using thin layer chromatography and determining the triacylglyceride profile by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry.
