Intracerebral Infection

Intracerebral infection is the invasion and multiplication of infectious agents within brain tissue, a serious biological process because the brain’s limited space and specialized defenses can make inflammation especially harmful. Pathogens may reach the brain through the bloodstream, nearby tissues, or direct injury, then interact with neural cells and trigger immune responses that disrupt the blood-brain barrier, increase tissue swelling, and impair neuronal function. Studying intracerebral infection helps explain host-pathogen interactions in the central nervous system and supports the development of diagnostic methods, antimicrobial therapies, and strategies to limit neurological damage. Experimental models also help evaluate how infection influences brain physiology and recovery.

Modeling Intracerebral Hemorrhage in Mice: Injection of Autologous Blood or Bacterial Collagenase

Clinically relevant animal models of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) are needed to extend our knowledge of hemorrhagic stroke and to examine novel therapeutic strategies. In this study, we describe and evaluate two ICH models that implement unilateral injections of either autologous whole blood or bacterial collagenase into the basal ganglia (corpus striatum) of mice.

Generation of a Murine Model with a Central Nervous System Infection

This video demonstrates the generation of a mouse model with a CNS infection. A suckling pup is injected with the virus both intracranially and intraperitoneally. The virus spreads, infecting the CNS causing neuronal cell death and inflammation. The pup is assessed for symptoms of infection as the disease progresses.

Non-restraining EEG Radiotelemetry: Epidural and Deep Intracerebral Stereotaxic EEG Electrode Placement

Non-restraining EEG radiotelemetry is a valuable methodological approach to record in vivo long-term electroencephalograms from freely moving rodents. This detailed protocol describes stereotaxic epidural and deep intracerebral electrode placement in different brain regions in order to obtain reliable recordings of CNS rhythmicity and CNS related behavioral stages.

Autologous Blood Injection to Model Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage in Mice

The autologous blood injection model of intracerebral hemorrhage in mice described in this protocol uses the double injection technique to minimize risk of blood reflux up the needle track, no anticoagulants in the pumping system, and eliminates all dead space and expandable tubing in the system.

Detection of Viral Proteins in Rabies Virus-Infected Mouse Brain Tissue
