Mixed Hernia

A mixed hernia is a hernia that combines two distinct patterns of tissue protrusion, most commonly a direct and an indirect inguinal hernia occurring on the same side. It develops when abdominal tissue or an organ pushes through weakened areas of the abdominal wall, passing both medial and lateral to the inferior epigastric vessels and creating separate or communicating hernia sacs. This condition, sometimes called a pantaloon hernia, illustrates how anatomy, tissue weakness, and increased intra-abdominal pressure interact. Recognizing its combined structure is important for accurate diagnosis, surgical planning, and understanding abdominal wall biomechanics.

This manuscript describes methods associated with creation and repair of a ventral abdominal wall defect (hernia). This model can be used to study repair strategies such as those that use implanted materials. In this manuscript, repair of the experimental hernia with porcine small intestinal submucosa is presented as an example.

Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia is the abnormal protrusion of the stomach or other abdominal organs through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm into the thoracic cavity.Normally, the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) lies below the diaphragm and is supported by the phrenoesophageal membrane, the diaphragmatic crura, and connective tissues. Weakening of these structures—due to aging, congenital defects like a short esophagus, or increased intra-abdominal pressure from coughing, obesity, pregnancy, or heavy...

Presented here is a method for improving the mesh placement in laparoscopic incisional hernia repair, which can shorten the time required for mesh fixation and reduce the occurrence of postoperative chronic pain.

Mixed Strategies

In game theory, mixed strategies involve players choosing their actions randomly from a set of available options. This approach contrasts with pure strategies, where players select a specific action with certainty. Mixed strategies become relevant in scenarios where there is no pure strategy equilibrium. A mixed-strategies Nash equilibrium occurs when players adopt strategies so that no one can benefit by unilaterally changing their own strategy, given the strategies of the others. In this...

The Thermodynamics of Mixing

Mixing is a fascinating phenomenon in thermodynamics, particularly when considering the Gibbs energy of a mixture at constant temperature and pressure. This energy, denoted as G, tends to decrease during spontaneous mixing processes, offering insights into the composition changes that occur.Imagine two ideal gases, initially separated in different containers, with amounts nA and nB, respectively, both at a temperature T and pressure p. The chemical potentials of these gases have their 'pure'...
