Irrigation Management

Irrigation management is the planning and control of water delivery to crops or other plants so their moisture needs are met efficiently while limiting waste and environmental stress. It combines soil-moisture monitoring, weather conditions, plant growth stage, and evapotranspiration to determine when and how much water to apply; irrigation systems then distribute water through methods such as drip lines, sprinklers, or surface flow. In biology and agricultural research, effective irrigation management supports plant growth, photosynthesis, nutrient uptake, and yield while reducing runoff, leaching, and excessive water use. These practices also help evaluate plant responses to drought and improve sustainable water management.

Design Example: Design of an Irrigation Channel

2025

Trapezoidal channels are widely used in irrigation systems due to their cost-effectiveness and efficiency in conveying water. Trapezoidal channels feature a flat bottom and sloping sides, making them stable and easier to construct compared to other shapes. The bottom width and side slope ratio are determined based on the required flow capacity and site conditions. The side slope is kept gentle for unlined channels to prevent soil erosion.Hydraulic parameters in channel design include the flow...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Monitoring Animals for Signs of Pain and Distress Recognizing early signs of pain is essential for ethical animal research. Animals are routinely monitored using behavioral, physical, and physiological parameters that reflect...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Breeding management supports the 3Rs by minimizing unnecessary animal production and ensuring that only the number of animals required for a study is generated. Effective breeding strategies help reduce surplus animals and...

We developed a method to detect Phytophthora capsici zoospores in water sources using a filter paper DNA extraction method coupled with a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay that can be analyzed in the field or in the lab.

Wastewater Irrigation Impacts on Soil Hydraulic Conductivity: Coupled Field Sampling and Laboratory Determination of Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity

2018

Here we present a methodology which matches a soil sample size and a hydraulic conductivity measurement device to prevent the so-called wall flow along the inside of the soil container from being erroneously included in water flow measurements. Its use is demonstrated with samples collected from a wastewater irrigation site.
