Lichen Symbiosis

Lichen symbiosis is a close biological association in which a fungus lives with a photosynthetic partner, such as a green alga or cyanobacterium, to form a stable lichen. The fungal network provides structure, protection, and access to water and minerals, while the photosynthetic partner produces organic carbon through photosynthesis; cyanobacterial partners may also contribute fixed nitrogen. This partnership enables lichens to colonize exposed habitats, including bare rock and nutrient-poor surfaces, where they contribute to weathering, soil formation, and ecosystem development. In biology, lichen symbiosis also supports studies of cooperation, stress tolerance, biodiversity, and environmental monitoring.

Symbiotic relationships are long-term, close interactions between individuals of different species that affect the distribution and abundance of those species. When a relationship is beneficial to both species, this is called mutualism. When the relationship is beneficial to one species but neither beneficial nor harmful to the other species, this is called commensalism. When one organism is harmed to benefit another, the relationship is known as parasitism. These types of relationships often...

2007

Jared Leadbetter takes us for a nature walk through the diversity of life resident in the termite hindgut - a microenvironment containing 250 different species found nowhere else on Earth. Jared reveals that the symbiosis exhibited by this system is multi-layered and involves not only a relationship between the termite and its gut inhabitants, but also involves a complex web of symbiosis among the gut microbes themselves.

This article introduces a surgical method using a pedicled tunica vaginalis to treat long-segment urethral stricture resulting from lichen sclerosus. The tunica vaginalis is an excellent substitute for the urethra, leading to quick postoperative recovery for patients.

CRISPR-Cas9-based Mutagenesis in the Entomopathogenic Nematode Steinernema hermaphroditum and the Maintenance of Mutant Lines

2025

This article demonstrates CRISPR-Cas9-mediated genome engineering in Steinernema hermaphroditum, an entomopathogenic (EPN: insect-parasitic) nematode and an emerging genetic model. The described technology is useful for creating mutants, allowing for the elucidation of gene functions in nematode biology that are relevant to mutualistic and parasitic symbiosis.
