Light Treatment

Light treatment is the controlled use of visible, ultraviolet, or infrared radiation to produce a biological response, making it an important tool in research and medicine. Its effects depend on wavelength, intensity, exposure time, and the molecules or photoreceptors that absorb the light; absorbed energy can alter cellular signaling, gene expression, metabolism, or DNA structure. In biology, researchers use light treatment to study photosynthesis, circadian rhythms, microbial growth, cell behavior, and tissue responses, while carefully controlling dose to distinguish stimulation from damage. These experiments clarify how organisms sense and respond to their physical environment and support applications in photobiology, therapeutic development, and biotechnology.

A Riboflavin and UV Light Treatment of Platelet Products to Eliminate Bacteria

2025

This video demonstrates the riboflavin and UV light-based pathogen reduction process against high-titer bacterial contamination in human platelet products. This process could help to lower the risk of severe adverse transfusion events associated with bacterial contamination.

Light-Activated Treatment of Bacterial Biofilms Using a Photosensitizer Precursor

Source: Zhao, K., et al. An In Vitro Model to Study the Effect of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid-mediated Photodynamic Therapy on Staphylococcus aureus Biofilm. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)The video demonstrates a photodynamic therapy protocol to assess antibacterial effects on Gram-positive bacterial biofilms. Biofilms are divided into four groups: two receive a photosensitizer precursor, and two receive a buffer. All are incubated in the dark, followed by red light exposure to one precursor-treated group and...

2015

The storage conditions of platelet products create an ideal environment for bacterial contaminants to multiply to dangerous levels. The goal of this study was to use a colony forming assay to evaluate a riboflavin based pathogen reduction process against high titer bacterial contamination in human platelet products.

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease. The Goeckerman regimen, formulated for the treatment of psoriasis, consists of exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) light and application of crude coal tar (CCT). The following protocol is for the administration of Goeckerman therapy for the treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis.
