Lobster Dissection

Lobster dissection is a hands-on biological method for examining the external and internal anatomy of a lobster, an arthropod whose segmented body and jointed appendages illustrate major principles of animal structure and function. During the procedure, students identify regions such as the cephalothorax and abdomen, carefully remove the exoskeleton, and expose organs including the gills, digestive tract, heart, and reproductive structures. This investigation connects anatomical form with functions such as movement, respiration, feeding, and circulation. In biology education and comparative anatomy, lobster dissection develops observation and laboratory skills while providing a model for understanding arthropod evolution, organization, and adaptation to aquatic environments.

Fishery-induced changes to exploited crustacean fisheries, such as the American lobster fishery, could potentially influence their reproductive dynamics, leading to a reduction in mating success. This study's goal was to develop a noninvasive method for ascertaining the mating success of female lobsters that may be physiologically or functionally mature.
