Medial Gastrocnemius Isolation

Medial gastrocnemius isolation is a biological and biomechanical approach for examining the medial head of the gastrocnemius, a calf muscle that contributes to ankle plantar flexion and knee flexion. It works by positioning the ankle and knee and controlling movement or resistance to emphasize medial gastrocnemius activity while limiting contributions from neighboring muscles, such as the soleus and lateral gastrocnemius; researchers may assess activation through force or electrical signals. This approach supports studies of muscle structure, contraction, coordination, and function during movement. It also helps evaluate neuromuscular performance, rehabilitation strategies, and adaptations to exercise or injury.

This method allows the recording of the force of twitch and tetanic contractions and action potentials in three types of motor units in the rat medial gastrocnemius muscle. The functional isolation of a single motor unit is induced by electrical stimulation of the axon.

The protocol shows a method to examine spatial correlation among the pre-synaptic terminals, post-synaptic receptors, and peri-synaptic Schwann cells in the rat medial gastrocnemius muscle using fluorescent immunohistochemistry with different biomarkers, namely, neurofilament 200, vesicular acetylcholine transporter, alpha-bungarotoxin, and S100.

Diagnosis of Musculus Gastrocnemius Tightness - Key Factors for the Clinical Examination

Isolated Musculus gastrocnemius tightness is a common cause for foot and ankle pathologies. Currently no standardized examination procedure exists. This manuscript demonstrates that 20 degree of knee flexion eliminates the restraining effect of the M. gastrocnemius on ankle dorsiflexion and presents a video description of a standardized examination protocol.

A Standardized Surgical Technique for Tessier Medial Transnasal Canthopexy

Medial canthopexy allows correction of the position and fixation of the medial canthal tendon. Due to the technical difficulties of this procedure, there is a need for a detailed protocol for educational purposes. Here, we describe a standardized reproducible technique for bilateral medial transnasal canthopexy by an orbitonasal approach.

The present work provides a comprehensive set of guidelines for manually tracing the medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures. This protocol can be applied to research involving structural and/or combined structural-functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) investigations of the MTL, in both healthy and clinical groups.
