Medial Lateral

Medial and lateral are anatomical directional terms that describe the position of a structure in relation to a body or organ’s midline. Medial indicates a location closer to the midline, whereas lateral indicates a location farther from it; these relationships are assessed using an established anatomical position or reference plane. In biology, this vocabulary helps describe tissues, organs, limbs, and other structures consistently, compare bilateral anatomy, and interpret diagrams, dissections, and images. Precise use of medial and lateral reduces ambiguity in anatomical communication and supports developmental, comparative, and functional studies.

The present work provides a comprehensive set of guidelines for manually tracing the medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures. This protocol can be applied to research involving structural and/or combined structural-functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) investigations of the MTL, in both healthy and clinical groups.

A Standardized Surgical Technique for Tessier Medial Transnasal Canthopexy

Medial canthopexy allows correction of the position and fixation of the medial canthal tendon. Due to the technical difficulties of this procedure, there is a need for a detailed protocol for educational purposes. Here, we describe a standardized reproducible technique for bilateral medial transnasal canthopexy by an orbitonasal approach.

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Lateral canthotomy is a potentially eyesight-saving procedure when performed emergently for an orbital compartment syndrome. An orbital compartment syndrome results from a buildup of pressure behind the eye; as pressure mounts, both the optic nerve and its vascular supply are compressed, rapidly leading to nerve damage and blindness if the pressure is not quickly relieved. The medial and lateral...
