Membrane Curvature

Membrane curvature is the bending of a lipid bilayer away from a flat surface, a fundamental property that shapes cellular membranes and enables compartmentalization. It arises when molecular forces or asymmetries redistribute lipids, recruit curvature-inducing proteins, insert amphipathic helices, or couple the membrane to the cytoskeleton; lipid composition, membrane tension, and protein geometry determine the resulting shape. In biology, membrane curvature drives vesicle budding and scission, membrane fusion, organelle formation, and intracellular trafficking. Measuring and manipulating curvature helps researchers explain how cells organize transport pathways and how disrupted membrane remodeling affects cellular function.

Degree of Curvature and Radius of Curvature

2025

The degree of curvature and the radius of curvature are fundamental concepts in determining the sharpness or smoothness of a curve. The degree of curvature is a measure of how steeply a curve bends and can be determined using the chord basis or the arc basis. In the chord basis method, the degree of curvature is defined as the central angle subtended by a chord of 30.48 meters, helping in the calculation of the radius of the curve. The arc basis method defines the degree of curvature as the...

Curvature and Its Interpretation

Curvature describes how rapidly a curve changes direction at a particular point. A curve with a small curvature bends gently, while a curve with a large curvature turns sharply. For a space curve, the position of a moving object can be described by a vector-valued function r(t), where t often represents time. The direction of motion is determined by the tangent vector, and the unit tangent vector is obtained by normalizing the derivative of the position vector. The unit tangent vector gives the...

Vertebral Column: Regions and Curvature

2023

The vertebral column or spine is a flexible column that supports the head, neck, and body and allows for their movements. It also protects the spinal cord. Regions of the Vertebral Column In an adult, the spine is subdivided into five regions: the cervical, the thoracic, the lumbar, the sacral, and the coccygeal region. The spine initially develops as a series of 33 vertebrae; after 20 years of age, the nine bones in the sacral region, five sacral, and four coccygeal bones fuse to form the...

Bottom-Up In Vitro Methods to Assay the Ultrastructural Organization, Membrane Reshaping, and Curvature Sensitivity Behavior of Septins

Septins are cytoskeletal proteins. They interact with lipid membranes and can sense but also generate membrane curvature at the micron scale. We describe in this protocol bottom-up in vitro methodologies for analyzing membrane deformations, curvature-sensitive septin binding, and septin filament ultrastructure.
