Membrane Spanning Region

A membrane spanning region is a part of a protein that crosses a biological lipid bilayer, anchoring the protein within the membrane and positioning functional domains on either side. In many membrane proteins, a sequence of hydrophobic amino acids folds into an alpha helix, allowing nonpolar side chains to interact with the bilayer’s lipid tails while polar or charged residues face aqueous environments or form pathways. Membrane spanning regions support transport, signal transduction, cell adhesion, and energy conversion by enabling proteins to detect stimuli, move molecules, or communicate across membranes. Identifying these regions helps researchers predict protein topology and understand membrane protein structure and function.

Measuring Verbal Working Memory Span

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Why is it relatively hard to remember everything on a shopping list if it includes more than just a handful of items? Why is it possible to remember a phone number that one just heard, but not two or three phone numbers at once? Why is it difficult to remember names when several new people are introduced at the same time? The answer has to do with the fact that over short-durations people rely on a specialized memory system...

Spanning Openings in Brick Walls

2024

In brick wall construction, supporting structures are crucial for openings like windows and doors to maintain the integrity and support the weight of the wall above. These supports include lintels, corbels, and arches, each serving specific structural purposes. Lintels are primary supports used to span openings and can be crafted from materials such as reinforced concrete, steel-reinforced brick masonry, or simple steel angles. These are straightforward to install and are typically concealed...

IR Frequency Region: Fingerprint Region

2024

IR spectra are divided into two main regions: the diagnostic region and the fingerprint region. The diagnostic region of the spectrum lies above 1500 cm−1. The absorptions resulting from single-bond vibrations of the N–H, C–H, and O–H stretch at higher wavenumbers and appear on the left side of the spectrum. The stretching absorptions of the C≡C and C≡N occur between 2100–2300 cm−1. In contrast, those arising from stretching absorptions of the C=O, C=N, and C=C occur between 1600–1850 cm−1. The...
