Microbial Loop

The microbial loop is an ecological pathway in which dissolved organic matter is converted into microbial biomass and returned to aquatic food webs, making it important for carbon and nutrient cycling. Bacteria and archaea take up dissolved organic compounds that would otherwise remain unavailable to larger organisms, while heterotrophic protists graze on these microbes and transfer their carbon and nutrients to zooplankton and other consumers. This process links microbial metabolism with primary production, influences the movement of organic matter through marine and freshwater ecosystems, and helps explain how energy supports organisms beyond direct phytoplankton consumption.

We describe a novel surgical method for catheterizing 'intestinal loops' within the ileum of sheep. Once animals have recovered from surgery and have cleared antibiotics and analgesics, multiple treatments can be deposited directly in loops via the catheters.

Nutrient Agar and Bacterial Culture Plate Preparation ExpandAdd 23 g of nutrient agar to a 2,000 mL beaker containing 1 L of distilled water 4 – 5 days before the activity. Place the beaker on a hotplate and set the hotplate to high, stirring the mixture with a stirring rod. When the agar has dissolved into the water, use a hot pad to transfer the beaker into an autoclave and set it to run at 121 °C for 15 minutes. When the cycle is finished, remove the beaker and allow it to cool to the touch...

Corbo1 1 Department of Biological Sciences, Wagner College, 1 Campus Road, Staten Island NY, 10301 Quantitative assessment of prokaryotes can be onerous given their abundance, propensity for exponential proliferation, species diversity within a population, and specific physiological needs. Compounding this challenge, is the four-phase nature in which bacteria replicate (lag, log, stationary and death). The ability to accurately...
