Microdialysis Catheter Placement

Microdialysis catheter placement is a technique for positioning a small probe in living tissue so researchers can sample extracellular chemicals while preserving local physiology. The catheter contains a semipermeable membrane and is perfused with a fluid; molecules such as neurotransmitters, metabolites, and drugs diffuse across the membrane according to concentration gradients, and the collected dialysate is analyzed. In biology, careful placement enables localized, time-resolved measurement in the brain and other tissues, supporting studies of neural signaling, metabolism, pharmacology, and disease-related changes. Accurate positioning and controlled perfusion are essential for obtaining representative samples and interpreting tissue responses.

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA When monitoring patients, it is important to obtain values that are accurate and reliable. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs, and for a majority of patients, measuring it utilizing non-invasive techniques provides accurate values. However, there are situations in which the blood pressure requires more exact, specific, and reliable measurements.

The overall goal is to enable clinicians to insert a central venous catheter under real-time ultrasound guidance via the right supraclavicular fossa view of the lower part of the superior vena cava. This view is useful for different catheter insertion sites, thrombosis detection before insertion and ultrasound guided correction of misplaced catheters.
