Oligomer Size Distribution

Oligomer size distribution describes the relative abundance of molecular assemblies containing different numbers of subunits, providing insight into how biological molecules organize and function. It arises from the balance between subunit association and dissociation, which depends on factors such as binding affinity, concentration, temperature, and solution conditions; analytical measurements can then distinguish monomers, dimers, and larger oligomers. In biology, this distribution helps characterize protein structure, enzyme regulation, receptor signaling, and the formation of higher-order complexes. Comparing distributions across conditions can reveal changes in molecular stability, assembly pathways, or aggregation, supporting studies of cellular mechanisms, disease-related misassembly, and therapeutic design.

Size-Exclusion Chromatography with Multi-Angle Light Scattering for Protein Oligomers

2025

This video describes SEC-MALS, which leverages the abilities of size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and multi-angle light scattering (MALS). In SEC-MALS, the SEC separates proteins or protein complexes based on their size, and the MALS detector determines the average molecular weight by measuring the intensity of the light scattered by the molecule at different angles.

Pore Size Distribution

2024

In concrete, the pore size distribution significantly influences the material's properties. Capillary pores, markedly larger than gel pores, form a vast network within partially hydrated cement paste, reducing the concrete's strength and increasing its permeability. This heightened permeability leads to a greater risk of damage from environmental factors like freeze-thaw cycles and chemical attacks, with the extent of vulnerability also being tied to the water-to-cement ratio. Adequate...

Presented here is a procedure for reproducible and statistically valid determinations of starch granule size distributions, and for specifying the determined granule lognormal size distributions using a two-parameter multiplicative form. It is applicable to all granule sizing analyses of gram-scale starch samples for plant and food science research.
