Mouse Auditory Ossicles

Mouse auditory ossicles are three tiny middle-ear bones, the malleus, incus, and stapes, that transmit sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear. Their connected joints and lever-like arrangement concentrate and amplify mechanical energy while matching the relatively large motion of the tympanic membrane to the fluid-filled cochlea, enabling efficient hearing. Because their anatomy and development can be examined alongside defined genetic and physiological changes, mouse auditory ossicles are important in studies of ear formation, sound transmission, and conductive hearing loss. Research on these structures also supports investigation of congenital abnormalities, disease mechanisms, and potential treatments for auditory disorders.

The Auditory Ossicles

The auditory ossicles of the middle ear transmit sounds from the air as vibrations to the fluid-filled cochlea. The auditory ossicles consist of two malleus (hammer) bones, two incus (anvil) bones, and two stapes (stirrups), one on each side. These bones develop during the fetal stage and are the ones to ossify first. They are fully mature at birth and do not grow afterward. The aptly named stapes look very much like a stirrup. The three ossicles are unique to mammals, and each plays a role in...

This video demonstrates the study of neuronal activity in a specific region of the mouse brain that processes auditory stimuli. The technique involves applying an inhibitory neurotransmission blocker and comparing neuronal responses to auditory stimuli before and after the drug is applied to the localized brain region.
