Nitrate Reduction

Nitrate reduction is the biological conversion of nitrate (NO₃⁻) to a more reduced nitrogen compound, an important step in the global nitrogen cycle. In many microorganisms, nitrate reductase transfers electrons from cellular electron donors to nitrate, producing nitrite (NO₂⁻) during anaerobic respiration; subsequent reactions can continue through denitrification to nitrogen gases or support nitrogen assimilation. This process influences soil fertility, plant nutrition, microbial energy metabolism, and aquatic ecosystem chemistry. Understanding nitrate reduction also supports wastewater treatment, where microbial communities remove excess nitrogen and help limit eutrophication and contamination of water resources.

Oxidation-Reduction Reactions

Oxidation–Reduction Reactions Earth’s atmosphere contains about 20% molecular oxygen, O2, a chemically reactive gas that plays an essential role in the metabolism of aerobic organisms and in many environmental processes that shape the world. The term oxidation was originally used to describe chemical reactions involving O2, but its meaning has evolved to refer to a broad and important reaction class known as oxidation–reduction (redox) reactions. Some redox reactions involve the transfer of...

Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution: Nitration of Benzene

2025

The nitration of benzene is an example of an electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction. It involves the formation of a very powerful electrophile, the nitronium ion, which is linear in shape. The reaction occurs through the interaction of two strong acids, sulfuric and nitric acid. Sulfuric acid is stronger and protonates the nitric acid on the hydroxyl group, followed by loss of water molecule, generating the nitronium ion. The nitronium ion acts as an electrophile that reacts with...

Antianginal Drugs: Nitrates and β-Blockers

2024

In cardiovascular health, antianginal drugs combat angina pectoris — a condition marked by chest pain owing to diminished blood flow to the heart. Organic nitrates, such as nitroglycerin, play a pivotal role. Once metabolized, they liberate nitric oxide, a molecular marvel. Nitric oxide triggers guanylyl cyclase and augments cGMP production. This biochemical cascade orchestrates the relaxation of vascular smooth muscles, ushering in vasodilation and enhancing coronary blood flow. Administered...
