Nonlinear Regression Analysis

Nonlinear regression analysis is a statistical method for modeling relationships in which changes in a response variable do not follow a straight-line pattern as one or more predictor variables change. It estimates parameters in a nonlinear equation by iteratively minimizing the difference between observed and predicted values, often using least-squares optimization and biologically informed model functions. In biology, nonlinear regression can describe dose-response curves, enzyme kinetics, population growth, and other processes with saturation, thresholds, or exponential behavior. By quantifying these patterns, researchers can compare experimental conditions, estimate meaningful parameters, and generate predictions that support interpretation of complex biological systems.

Regression Analysis

2023

Regression analysis is a statistical tool that describes a mathematical relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. In regression analysis, a regression equation is determined based on the line of best fit– a line that best fits the data points plotted in a graph. This line is also called the regression line. The algebraic equation for the regression line is called the regression equation. It is represented as: In the equation, is the dependent variable, x...

Regression Toward the Mean

2020

Regression toward the mean (“RTM”) is a phenomenon in which extremely high or low values—for example, and individual’s blood pressure at a particular moment—appear closer to a group’s average upon remeasuring. Although this statistical peculiarity is the result of random error and chance, it has been problematic across various medical, scientific, financial and psychological applications. In particular, RTM, if not taken into account, can interfere when researchers try to extrapolate results...

Microsoft Excel: Regression Analysis

Regression analysis in Microsoft Excel is a powerful statistical method for examining the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. It's used extensively in fields such as economics, biology, and business to predict outcomes, understand relationships, and make data-driven decisions. The most common type is linear regression, which attempts to fit a straight line through the data points to model the relationship between variables. To perform regression...

Nonlinear Pharmacokinetics: Causes of Nonlinearity

2025

Nonlinearity in drug pharmacokinetics is caused by various factors influencing how a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted. Understanding these nonlinear processes is crucial for predicting drug behavior in the body and optimizing drug dosing regimens. Nonlinear drug absorption can occur when the process is rate-limited by solubility, carrier-mediated transport systems, or saturation of the presystemic gut wall or hepatic metabolism. For instance, high doses of riboflavin...

2016

Saturable and reverse saturable scattering were discovered in isolated plasmonic particles and adopted as a novel non-bleaching contrast method in super-resolution microscopy. Here the experimental procedures of detecting and extracting nonlinear scattering are explained in detail, as well as how to enhance resolution with the aid of saturated excitation microscopy.
