Pancreatic Enzyme Release

Pancreatic enzyme release is the regulated secretion of digestive enzymes from the exocrine pancreas, a process essential for breaking down nutrients in the small intestine. When partially digested food enters the duodenum, intestinal hormones such as cholecystokinin stimulate pancreatic acinar cells to release enzymes, while secretin promotes bicarbonate-rich fluid from duct cells that neutralizes gastric acid. These secretions include amylase, lipase, and protease precursors, which digest carbohydrates, fats, and proteins under alkaline conditions. Understanding this process helps explain nutrient absorption and disorders such as pancreatitis, pancreatic insufficiency, and impaired digestive function.

Biological Catalysts All living organisms continuously perform numerous biochemical reactions to sustain their presence. Most of these reactions require an input of energy to start, which is called the activation energy. Catalysts are chemicals that lower the activation energy. Even though catalysts facilitate a chemical reaction, they are not consumed by it. This means a catalyst can facilitate a specific chemical reaction over and over in succession, increasing the rate of that reaction.

Inside living organisms, enzymes act as catalysts for many biochemical reactions involved in cellular metabolism. The role of enzymes is to reduce the activation energies of biochemical reactions by forming complexes with its substrates. The lowering of activation energies favor an increase in the rates of biochemical reactions. Enzyme deficiencies can often translate into life-threatening diseases. For example, a genetic abnormality resulting in the deficiency of the enzyme G6PD...

Pancreatic Islets Isolation through Collagenase Perfusion: An Enzymatic Method to Isolate Pancreatic Islet Cells

2023

Pancreatic islets, also called the Islets of Langerhans, are a cluster of endocrine cells which produces hormones for glucose regulation and other important biological functions. This protocol explains a method for isolating pancreatic islets by first perfusing collagenase via Ampulla of Vater to digest the exocrine pancreatic tissue and a simplified density gradient centrifugation to purify the islets from mice.
