Pellet Heterogeneity

Pellet heterogeneity is the variation in composition, particle size, density, or biological content within a pellet formed by centrifugation, and it can affect how accurately samples are analyzed. During centrifugation, cells, organelles, macromolecules, or particles sediment at different rates according to their size, density, shape, and interactions, producing layers or uneven distributions within the pellet. In biology, recognizing this heterogeneity helps researchers interpret microscopy, biochemical assays, and downstream extraction results. Controlling centrifugal force, time, temperature, sample concentration, and resuspension conditions can improve pellet uniformity and reproducibility in cell fractionation, extracellular vesicle isolation, and other separation workflows.

Liquid-grown Streptomyces cultures are characterized by mycelial pellets that are heterogeneous in size. We here describe a method to analyze and sort such pellets in a high-throughput manner. These pellets can be used for further analyses, which will provide leads to understand and control growth heterogeneity.

Heterogeneous Catalysis

2026

Heterogeneous catalysis involves a catalyst in a different phase from the reactants. It is a process where the catalyst and the reactants are in distinct phases, typically solid and gas or liquid. Most heterogeneous catalysts are metals, metal oxides, or acids. The list includes transition metals like iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), tungsten (W), silver (Ag), and copper (Cu). These metals possess partially vacant d orbitals that...

HKUST-1 as a Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Synthesis of Vanillin

2016

The conversion of trans-ferulic acid to vanillin was achieved by heterogeneous catalysis. HKUST-1 was employed in this synthesis and the essential step in the catalytic process was the generation of unsaturated metal sites. Thus, when the catalyst was activated under vacuum, full vanillin conversion (yield of 95%) was obtained.

2016

In this study, a protocol was developed to produce good quality pellets using a flat die pellet mill at reduced specific energy consumption testing high-moisture corn stover and a starch based binder. The results indicated that adding a corn starch binder improved the pellet durability, reduced percent fines and decreased specific energy consumption.
