Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment (PPE) comprises wearable or portable barriers that reduce exposure to biological, chemical, and physical hazards, protecting workers and limiting contamination. In biology, items such as gloves, laboratory coats, eye protection, and respirators work by blocking contact, splashes, droplets, or airborne particles, while their effectiveness depends on hazard-appropriate selection, fit, and correct donning and removal. PPE supports biosafety in teaching laboratories, clinical settings, field studies, and research involving microorganisms or biological samples. Used with hand hygiene, engineering controls, and waste procedures, it helps prevent exposure events and cross-contamination, strengthening safe experimental practice and reliable biological research.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is unique clothing or equipment worn by an employee to minimize or prevent exposure to infectious agents. PPE creates a barrier between the employee and the infectious materials. PPE must be readily available in the patient care area. PPE includes gloves, gowns and aprons, masks and respirators, goggles, face shields, shoes, and headcovers: • Gloves protect the hands. • Gowns and aprons protect skin and clothing. • Masks protect the mouth and nose.

COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak: Doffing Personal Protective Equipment When Exiting A Patient Room

2020

In pandemic times, medical staff is becoming a key resource in fighting the infection. To achieve the best medical care, relevant techniques and procedures have to be taught to medical staff to reduce the risk of infection. Doffing the contaminated personal protective gear after treating COVID-19 patients has a high risk of forming infective aerosols which could lead to an infection of the medical staff. In this video, the manner of doffing of personal protective gear to minimize the risk of...

Cited by 5 •

2021

The primary goal of this study is to describe a protocol to prepare polymeric fiber mats with consistent morphology via solution blow spinning (SBS). We aim to use SBS to develop novel, tunable, flexible polymeric fiber nanocomposites for various applications, including protective materials, by incorporating nanoparticles in a polymer-elastomer matrix.
