Pollen Compatibility

Pollen compatibility is the ability of pollen to recognize and fertilize a receptive flower, enabling sexual reproduction in flowering plants. After pollination, compatible pollen grains adhere to the stigma, hydrate, germinate, and extend pollen tubes through the style toward the ovule, while molecular recognition systems can reject incompatible pollen through self-incompatibility or cross-incompatibility responses. Understanding these interactions helps explain reproductive barriers, genetic diversity, and patterns of seed production in plant populations. In agriculture and plant breeding, compatibility testing guides parent selection, improves hybrid development, supports controlled crosses, and helps manage pollination in crops with specialized reproductive systems.

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA While the use of various chemicals in experimental research is essential, it is also important to safely store and maintain them as a part of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) program. The properties of chemicals and their reactivity vary broadly and if chemicals are not managed, stored, and labeled properly, they can have harmful or even destructive consequences such as toxic fume...
