Pore-loop Channels

Pore-loop channels are membrane proteins that create selective pathways for ions to cross biological membranes, making them essential for electrical signaling, osmotic balance, and cellular communication. Their pore loop projects into the channel’s central cavity and forms a selectivity filter, allowing particular ions to pass while restricting others; changes in membrane voltage or chemical signals can regulate opening and closing. In biology, these channels help explain nerve impulses, muscle contraction, secretion, and sensory responses. Studying their structure and gating also supports research into channelopathies, pharmacological blockers, and therapeutic strategies targeting abnormal ion transport.

Ion Channels

The movement of ions like sodium, potassium, and calcium into and out of the cell is essential to maintain the electrochemical gradient in living cells. The ion channels—a class of membrane transport proteins—help maintain this ionic gradient for the smooth functioning of physiological activities such as maintaining cell size and volume, conducting nerve impulses, and gas and nutrient exchange. Ion channels are specialized integral membrane proteins on the plasma membrane that allow specific...

A description of the methods used to convert an HP DeskJet 500 printer into a bioprinter. The printer is capable of processing living cells, which causes transient pores in the membrane. These pores can be utilized to incorporate small molecules, including fluorescent G-actin, into the printed cells.

2014

A procedure for creating and imaging capillary bridges in slit-pore geometry is presented. The creation of capillary bridges relies on the formation of pillars to provide a directional physical and chemical heterogeneity to pin the fluid. Capillary bridges are formed and manipulated using microstages and visualized using a CCD camera.
