Posterior Thoracic Muscles

Posterior thoracic muscles are the muscles on the back of the chest that stabilize the vertebral column and shoulder girdle while contributing to trunk movement and breathing. They function through coordinated contraction: superficial muscles such as the trapezius, latissimus dorsi, and rhomboids move or secure the scapula, whereas deeper muscles including the erector spinae and transversospinalis extend, rotate, and stabilize the spine; serratus posterior muscles assist rib movement. Studying these muscles helps explain posture, upper-limb motion, respiratory mechanics, and patterns of back or shoulder dysfunction in biology, anatomy, rehabilitation, and clinical research.

Thoracic Aorta

The thoracic section of the aorta begins at the T5 vertebra and extends to the T12 level at the diaphragm, initially progressing through the mediastinum to the left of the spinal column. Throughout its course in the thoracic segment, the thoracic aorta emits various offshoots known collectively as visceral and parietal branches. The branches that predominantly supply blood to visceral organs are termed visceral branches and include bronchial, pericardial, esophageal, and mediastinal arteries,...
