Propionibacterium Acnes

Propionibacterium acnes, now commonly classified as Cutibacterium acnes, is a Gram-positive, slow-growing, anaerobic bacterium that normally inhabits human skin, especially sebaceous hair follicles. It uses lipases to break down sebum triglycerides into free fatty acids, while bacterial components and metabolites can stimulate innate immune signaling and contribute to follicular inflammation. This organism is therefore important in studying acne vulgaris, skin microbiome balance, and host-microbe interactions. Research also examines differences among bacterial strains, antimicrobial susceptibility, and how changes in the follicular environment influence colonization and inflammation.

Acne Infection

2026

Acne is a multifactorial skin condition primarily affecting adolescents and young adults, with a global prevalence estimated to exceed 75% in this demographic. The condition is characterized by the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules, pustules, nodules, and, in severe cases, cysts, particularly in areas rich in sebaceous glands such as the face, neck, chest, and back. The pathogenesis involves increased sebum production, follicular hyperkeratinization, colonization by...

This paper describes a methodology to prepare cardiovascular tissue samples for MS analysis that allows for (1) the analysis of ECM protein composition, (2) the identification of glycosylation sites, and (3) the compositional characterization of glycan forms. This methodology can be applied, with minor modifications, to the study of the ECM in other tissues.

Titanium Dioxide-based Enrichment of Phosphopeptides: A Method for the Selective Isolation of Phosphopeptides from Peptide Library

This video demonstrates titanium dioxide-based enrichment of phosphopeptides extracted from prostate tumor tissue. These enriched phosphopeptides can be used for downstream applications such as protein characterization to understand cell signaling pathways involved in prostate cancer progression.

Peptide Purification: An RP-HPLC-based Technique to Extract Peptides from Digested Protein Lysates

In this video, we demonstrate reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography to purify peptides from a digested protein lysate mixture. These purified peptides are then lyophilized and stored for downstream applications. Analysis of peptides can help understand the mechanics involved in cellular signaling and cancer.
