Proximal Tubule Reabsorption

Proximal tubule reabsorption is the kidney process that recovers valuable solutes and water from the fluid filtered into the nephron, making it essential for maintaining blood volume, electrolyte balance, and chemical homeostasis. In proximal tubule epithelial cells, the basolateral sodium-potassium ATPase creates a sodium gradient that drives apical cotransport of glucose, amino acids, phosphate, and bicarbonate, while water follows osmotically through cellular and paracellular pathways. This coordinated transport returns most filtered nutrients and a substantial fraction of water to the bloodstream. Understanding proximal tubule reabsorption supports research into renal physiology, acid-base regulation, drug handling, and disorders such as diabetes and kidney injury.

We present an optimized protocol for processing whole human kidneys to isolate and culture primary renal proximal tubule epithelial cells and the application of these cells in a three-dimensional, microfluidic, microphysiological platform to recapitulate the renal proximal tubule.

Malpighian Tubule Dissection from an Adult Fly: Isolating an Osmoregulatory and Excretory Organ

This article describes the dissection of the anterior Malpighian tubules (MT) from a female Drosophila fly and an example protocol from Rossano et al. (2017) in which the MTs are prepared for live imaging in a perfusion chamber.

Isolation of Immune Regulatory Sertoli Cells from Mouse Seminiferous Tubules

Tubular Reabsorption and Secretion

2025

Tubular secretion and reabsorption are two critical processes in the nephron tubule of the kidneys. When the fluid filtered from the glomerulus enters the proximal convoluted tubule, it is referred to as filtrate, and its composition changes due to tubular reabsorption and secretion. Tubular reabsorption is a selective process that starts when the filtrate enters the proximal tubules. It involves substances traveling through the transcellular route (through the tubule cell and peritubular...

Reabsorption and Secretion in the PCT

2025

The Proximal Convoluted Tubule, or PCT, plays a pivotal role in the body's filtration system. They are primarily responsible for reabsorbing solutes and water from the filtered fluid produced by the glomeruli. Most of the filtered water, ions, and organic solutes such as glucose and amino acids are reabsorbed by the PCT. Transport mechanisms involving sodium ions (Na+) contribute significantly to solute reabsorption. These mechanisms include symport and antiport processes. A key example is the...
