Real-time Monitoring

Real-time monitoring is the continuous measurement and analysis of changing conditions as they occur, allowing biological systems to be studied without relying solely on endpoint observations. In biology, sensors, live-cell imaging, automated sampling, and computational tools capture signals such as cell activity, physiological changes, or environmental conditions and transmit them for immediate interpretation. This approach can reveal transient events, feedback responses, and temporal relationships that static measurements may miss. Applications include tracking microbial growth, observing cellular dynamics, monitoring organismal physiology, and assessing responses to experimental treatments, supporting more precise experiments and a clearer understanding of dynamic biological processes.

Free solution capillary electrophoresis is a fast, cheap and robust analytical method that enables the quantitative monitoring of chemical reactions in real time. Its utility for rapid, convenient and precise analysis is demonstrated here through analysis of covalent peptide grafting onto chitosan films for improved cell adhesion.

Cellular Impedance-Based Analysis for Monitoring of Cellular Processes in Real-Time

Mammalian cells expressing the bacterial bioluminescence gene cassette (lux) produce light autonomously. The resulting bioluminescent dynamics upon chemical exposure have been demonstrated to reflect the treatment effects on cellular growth and metabolism, making these cells an inexpensive, continuous, real-time toxicity screening tool that can easily be adapted for high-throughput automation.

In Vivo Real-Time Glutamate Monitoring Using an Enzyme-Coated Microelectrode Array

In this video, a Multielectrode Array (MEA) coated with glutamate Oxidase is implanted into the brain tissue of an anesthetized mouse. Glutamate solution is injected into the extracellular space where the MEA detects the glutamate levels, enabling real-time monitoring of glutamate uptake by the astrocytes.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is the key variable to understanding cardiac electrophysiology. Physical exercise has beneficial effects but may also be harmful in the context of cardiovascular diseases. This manuscript provides a method of recording real-time ECG during exercise, which can serve to investigate its effects on cardiac electrophysiology in mice.
