Sample Solution Loading

Sample Solution Loading is the controlled transfer of a prepared biological sample into a tube, well, channel, or other analytical vessel for processing and measurement. The procedure uses a calibrated pipette or related dispensing tool to deliver a defined volume while maintaining sample integrity, preventing contamination, and avoiding bubbles or cross-contamination between samples. In biology, accurate loading supports techniques such as gel electrophoresis, microplate assays, chromatography, and cell-based analyses, where consistent sample placement and volume directly affect separation, detection, and quantitative comparison. Careful loading improves reproducibility and helps researchers interpret experimental results with confidence.

The analytical ultracentrifuge (AUC) sample cell holds sample and reference buffer and during experiments and is exposed to high vacuum and rotor speeds up to 60,000 rpm. This video will demonstrate the rigorous attention to detail necessary for assembly, loading and alignment of this very important component of an AUC experiment.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Michael Evans — Georgia Institute of Technology A solution is a homogeneous mixture containing some components in small amounts, called solutes, and one component in a large amount, called the solvent. Solid-liquid solutions contain one or more solid solutes dissolved in a liquid solvent. Solutions are ubiquitous in chemistry: they are used to store and handle small amounts of material, carry out chemical reactions, and develop materials with controllable properties.

A microdialysis profiler is described to sample dissolved porewater solutes across an oxic-anoxic soil-water interface in situ with minimal disturbance. This device is designed to capture rapid changes in concentration-depth profiles induced by disturbances at the soil-water interface and beyond.

Making Solutions in the Laboratory

2023

The ability to successfully make solutions is a basic laboratory skill performed in virtually all biological and chemical experiments. A solution is a homogenous mixture of solute dissolved in bulk liquid known as the solvent. Solutions can be described by their solute concentration, a measure of how much solute is present per unit of solution. In this video, a step-by-step procedure for how to make a water-based, or aqueous, solution for biological applications is presented. The video...
