Seal Resistance Measurement

Seal resistance measurement is an electrophysiological method used to assess the electrical tightness of a seal between a recording pipette and a cell membrane. During patch-clamp setup, a small test voltage is applied and the resulting leak current is measured; resistance is calculated from the voltage-to-current relationship, with a high value indicating a low-conductance, stable seal. This measurement helps researchers verify recording quality before analyzing ion channel currents, membrane potential, or whole-cell responses. In biology, it supports studies of neuronal signaling, sensory physiology, and cellular pharmacology while providing a quantitative quality-control step for comparing electrophysiological experiments.
