Solar Radiation

Solar radiation is electromagnetic energy emitted by the Sun, spanning ultraviolet, visible, and infrared wavelengths, and it influences biological systems by supplying energy while also creating environmental stress. In plants, photosynthetic pigments absorb mainly visible light and convert its energy into chemical energy through electron transfer and carbon fixation; ultraviolet radiation can instead damage DNA and cellular components, while organisms use pigments, repair pathways, and protective structures to limit harm. These interactions shape photosynthesis, growth, survival, and ecological productivity, making solar radiation important in plant physiology, microbial ecology, climate-related biology, and studies of adaptation to changing light environments.

2023

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University Today's modern world requires the use of a large amount of energy. While we harness energy from fossil fuels such as coal and oil, these sources are nonrenewable and thus the supply is limited. To maintain our global lifestyle, we must extract energy from renewable sources. The most promising renewable source, in terms of abundance, is the sun, which provides us with more than enough solar energy to fully fuel our...

Two 'Combined Stress test with in situ measurement' setups, which allow real-time monitoring of accelerated degradation of solar cells and modules, were designed and constructed. These setups allow the simultaneous use of humidity, temperature, electrical biases, and illumination as independently controlled stress factors. The setups and various experiments executed are presented.

2015

Stereotactic ablative body radiation therapy (SBRT) involves the precise delivery of high-dose radiation to cancer tumor targets. A novel SBRT platform offers a first-of-its-kind gimbaled radiation accelerator mounted within a pivoting O-ring gantry capable of dynamic image-guided tumor tracking. Here, we describe dynamic tumor tracking for lung targets.

Biological Effects of Radiation

All radioactive nuclides emit high-energy particles or electromagnetic waves. When this radiation encounters living cells, it can cause heating, break chemical bonds, or ionize molecules. The most serious biological damage results when these radioactive emissions fragment or ionize molecules. For example, α and β particles emitted from nuclear decay reactions possess much higher energies than ordinary chemical bond energies. When these particles strike and penetrate matter, they produce ions...
