Solution Change Method

Solution Change Method is a laboratory technique for replacing one experimental solution with another around cells, tissues, or other biological preparations while maintaining controlled conditions. The method works by introducing a fresh solution through controlled addition or perfusion while removing or displacing the previous solution, allowing researchers to alter the chemical environment in a defined sequence. By controlling solution composition, timing, and exchange conditions, investigators can measure biological responses to drugs, ions, nutrients, or other treatments. This approach supports experiments in cell physiology, pharmacology, microscopy, and biochemical analysis, where reproducible exposure to changing solutions is essential for interpreting experimental results.

Melting Land and Sea Ice ExpandNOTE: This activity is a simulation of land- and sea-ice melting and their effects on water levels. First, label one graduated cylinder as 'Sea Ice' and the other graduated cylinder as 'Land Ice.' Hypotheses: the experimental hypothesis might be that the land ice melting will cause the water level to rise more than the melting sea ice. The null hypothesis would be that there will be no difference in the change in water level between the two containers. Add 10 ice...

The certainty of climate change remains a public controversy despite the consensus among approximately 97% of active climate researchers, who not only agree that the Earth’s climate is changing but also state that this change is intensified by human activity, predominantly carbon emissions 1. The disconnect between the public and the experts is partly due to poor understanding of the mechanisms involved in climate change as well as the differences among essential concepts such as weather and...

There are two criteria that favor, but do not guarantee, the spontaneous formation of a solution: A decrease in the internal energy of the system (an exothermic change, as discussed in the previous chapter on thermochemistry) An increased dispersal of matter in the system (which indicates an increase in the entropy of the system, as you will learn about in the later chapter on thermodynamics) In the process of dissolution, an internal energy change often, but not always, occurs as heat is...

Making Solutions in the Laboratory

The ability to successfully make solutions is a basic laboratory skill performed in virtually all biological and chemical experiments. A solution is a homogenous mixture of solute dissolved in bulk liquid known as the solvent. Solutions can be described by their solute concentration, a measure of how much solute is present per unit of solution. In this video, a step-by-step procedure for how to make a water-based, or aqueous, solution for biological applications is presented. The video...

A Method for Investigating Change Blindness in Pigeons (Columba Livia)

Change blindness is a phenomenon of visual attention, whereby changes to a visual display go unnoticed under certain specific circumstances. This protocol describes a variation on the flicker paradigm for investigating change blindness that is appropriate and effective for research with pigeons.
