Spatially Invariant Vector Quantization

Spatially Invariant Vector Quantization is a pattern-coding method that represents local data vectors with a shared set of prototype vectors, regardless of where those patterns occur in an image or spatial field. The method divides data into local patches or feature vectors, compares each with a learned codebook, and assigns the nearest prototype, allowing similar biological structures to receive the same code even when they appear at different positions. In biology, this approach can compress microscopy images, organize cellular or tissue patterns, and support segmentation or classification by reducing complex measurements to discrete visual features. Its effectiveness depends on how well the codebook captures biologically meaningful variation.

Isolating Invariant Natural Killer T Cells from a Mouse Model

2025

This video illustrates a method for isolating invariant natural killer T cells, also known as iNKT cells. The procedure begins with injecting a synthetic glycolipid into a mouse to stimulate the activation and proliferation of iNKT cells in the spleen. Subsequently, single-cell suspensions are prepared from the spleen and incubated with iNKT-cell-recognizing complexes labeled with fluorophores, followed by magnetic bead-based separation, to isolate the iNKT cells.

Linear time-invariant Systems

2024

A system is linear if it displays the characteristics of homogeneity and additivity, together termed the superposition property. This principle is fundamental in all linear systems. Linear time-invariant (LTI) systems include systems with linear elements and constant parameters. The input-output behavior of an LTI system can be fully defined by its response to an impulsive excitation at its input. Once this impulse response is known, the system's reaction to any other input can be calculated...

Spatial Cueing

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Attention refers to the limited human ability to select some information for processing at the expense of other stimuli in the environment. Attention operates in all sensory modalities: vision, hearing, touch, even taste and smell. It is most often studied in the visual domain though. A common way to study visual attention is with a spatial cueing paradigm. This paradigm allows researchers to measure the consequences of focusing...

Spatial Memory Testing Using Mazes

2023

Spatial learning and memory are neurological functions that allow us to remember important details associated with our environment. Scientists test this phenomenon in rodents using different types of mazes like Morris water maze, Radial water maze, and Barnes maze. By investigating spatial memory in rodents, neurobehavioral scientists can gain valuable understanding of how these processes are altered following brain damage in humans. Here, the neurobiology behind spatial memory is briefly...
