Splenius Capitis

The splenius capitis is a paired, superficial intrinsic back muscle that connects the upper thoracic and lower cervical spine to the skull, helping stabilize and move the head and neck. When both muscles contract, they extend the head and neck; unilateral contraction produces ipsilateral rotation and lateral flexion through their attachments at the mastoid process and lateral superior nuchal line. Its coordinated activity supports posture, gaze control, and everyday neck movements, while its anatomy is important in biology, physical examination, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, and the interpretation of neck pain or strain.
