Spore Discharge Assay

A spore discharge assay is a biological method for measuring how effectively fungi release spores, providing a way to study reproduction, dispersal, and environmental responses. In a typical assay, spores discharged from fruiting structures are collected on a nearby surface or within an air-sampling system and quantified, often under controlled conditions such as humidity, temperature, light, or airflow. The results can reveal how physical forces and fungal structures drive release, including mechanisms based on water-film formation and rapid fluid movement. Spore discharge assays support research on fungal life cycles, disease transmission, ecology, and the development of strategies to monitor or limit airborne spores.
