Stomoxys Calcitrans

Stomoxys calcitrans, commonly called the stable fly, is a blood-feeding muscid fly that affects animal health, livestock production, and vector biology. Unlike house flies, both male and female stable flies use piercing-sucking mouthparts to take repeated blood meals, while their larvae develop in moist, fermenting plant material and manure; adults locate hosts using visual and chemical cues. This species causes painful bites, irritation, blood loss, and reduced animal productivity, and it can mechanically transmit some pathogens between hosts. Studying its life cycle, behavior, and ecology supports integrated pest management and helps assess its significance in agricultural and veterinary systems.
