Substrate Conversion

Substrate conversion is the biological transformation of a starting molecule, or substrate, into one or more products, a central process in metabolism and cellular function. Typically, an enzyme binds the substrate at its active site and lowers the activation energy needed to break, form, or rearrange chemical bonds; reaction rate depends on factors such as substrate concentration, temperature, pH, and enzyme specificity. Cells use substrate conversion to release energy, synthesize cellular components, and regulate biochemical pathways. Studying these reactions helps researchers understand disease-related metabolic changes and supports applications in biotechnology, including the production of pharmaceuticals, biofuels, and other valuable compounds.

Other than maintaining genome stability via DNA repair, homologous recombination plays an important role in diversifying the genome. In fact, the recombination of sequences forms the molecular basis of genomic evolution. Random and non-random permutations of genomic sequences create a library of new amalgamated sequences. These newly formed genomes can determine the fitness and survival of cells. In bacteria, homologous and non-homologous types of recombination lead to the evolution of new...

Assessing Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy Species Barriers with an In Vitro Prion Protein Conversion Assay

Measuring the barrier to the interspecies transmission of prion diseases is challenging and typically involves animal challenges or biochemical assays. Here, we present an in vitro prion protein conversion assay with the ability to predict species barriers.

Conversion of Units

Sometimes, there is a need to convert from one unit to another one. For instance, reading a cookbook in which quantities are expressed in units of liters or ounces may require conversion of quantities to cups. Or, when looking up directions on how to get to a location, we may be interested to know how many miles we are going to walk. In this case, we would have to convert units of feet or meters to miles. The first step in the unit conversion is to list the given units and the units required...

Cash Conversion Cycle

Businesses often focus on improving efficiency in inventory management, accounts receivable, and accounts payable to optimize the Cash Conversion Cycle (CCC). A shorter CCC means faster cash recovery, allowing businesses to reinvest in operations or reduce the need for external financing. By reducing Days Inventory Outstanding (DIO), companies can minimize excess inventory and free up cash. Techniques like just-in-time (JIT) inventory systems can help achieve this. For Days Sales Outstanding...
