Time Spent Open Arms

Time spent open arms is a behavioral measure from the elevated plus maze, a rodent assay used to assess anxiety-like behavior and exploratory patterns. The maze contains two open and two enclosed arms elevated above the floor, and researchers record how long an animal enters or remains in the exposed arms during a defined test period. Greater open-arm time generally reflects reduced avoidance of exposed spaces, whereas less time suggests increased anxiety-like behavior, although locomotor activity and exploratory motivation can also affect results. This measure supports studies of neural circuits, stress responses, genetic influences, and the behavioral effects of pharmacological or environmental interventions.

Muscles that Move the Arm

2024

Nine muscles are involved in arm movements. Two of these, the pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi, originate from the axial skeleton and are called axial muscles. The other seven originate from the scapula and are called the scapular muscles. The pectoralis major has two origins. Its clavicular head originates on the medial half of the clavicle. In contrast, the sternocostal head originates on the costal cartilages of ribs 1-6, the sternum, and the aponeurosis of the external oblique of the...

2016

We developed a real-time mirror robot system for functional recovery of hemiplegic arms using automatic control technology, conducted a clinical study on healthy subjects, and determined tasks through feedback from rehabilitation doctors. This simple mirror robot can be applied effectively to occupational therapy in stroke patients with a hemiplegic arm.

We present a protocol to test the aerobic and anaerobic power of the upper body muscles over a duration of 3 min in able-bodied as well as in paraplegic and tetraplegic individuals. The protocol presents specific modifications in its application for upper-body exercise in individuals with or without disability.

Testing Animal Anxiety in Rats: Effects of Open Arm Ledges and Closed Arm Wall Transparency in Elevated Plus Maze Test

Rats' anxiety-like behavior tested by the elevated plus maze varies highly depending on the testing environment. Here we show how apparatus settings, especially arm structure, affect behavior on the maze, and we explain a reliable protocol to detect effects of anxiolytic drugs. This report will contribute to anxiety research.
