Transverse M-mode

Transverse M-mode is an ultrasound imaging technique that records the movement of anatomical structures along a scan line positioned in a transverse plane, providing a time-based view of tissue motion. It works by transmitting repeated ultrasound pulses and displaying returning echoes according to depth and time, so moving interfaces appear as characteristic traces. In biology and biomedical research, this approach helps quantify changes in size, position, and motion within structures such as the heart, blood vessels, and developing tissues. Its high temporal resolution supports assessment of rhythmic activity and mechanical function, complementing conventional two-dimensional ultrasound images.

Transverse aortic constriction (TAC) in the mouse is a commonly used experimental model to study mechanisms underlying cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure development. Here, we describe procedures to constrict the aorta to create a reproducible degree of cardiac hypertrophy in mice.

Minimally invasive transverse aortic constriction (MTAC) conserves the essentials of regular transverse aortic constriction (TAC) while eliminating the use of a ventilator with tracheal intubation. It proves to be a highly desirable method for high-throughput studies on left ventricular overload, particularly in translational studies.

What is a Mode?

2023

The mode is one of the commonly used measures of a central tendency. It is defined as the most frequent value in a data set. There can be more than one mode in a data set if multiple values have the same highest frequency. For instance, suppose that the Statistics exam scores of 20 students are: 50; 53; 59; 59; 63; 63; 72; 72; 72; 72; 72; 76; 78; 81; 83; 84; 84; 84; 90; 93. Here, the mode is 72, as it occurs most frequently, five times. A data set with two modes is called bimodal. For example,...

Speed of a Transverse Wave

2025

The speed of a wave depends on the characteristics of the medium. For example, in the case of a guitar, the strings vibrate to produce the sound. The speed of the waves on the strings and the wavelength determine the frequency of the sound produced. The strings on a guitar have different thicknesses but may be made of similar material. They have different linear densities, and the linear density is defined as the mass per length. One of the key properties of any wave is the wave speed. Light...
