Whole Mount Method

The whole mount method is a biological preparation technique in which an intact specimen, organ, or embryonic structure is processed and mounted for examination as a single unit rather than sectioned into thin slices. Typically, the sample is fixed to preserve morphology, stained to enhance selected structures, and positioned in a mounting medium that supports microscopy while retaining spatial relationships. This approach allows researchers to assess overall anatomy, tissue organization, developmental patterns, and the distribution of labeled cells or molecular markers. Whole mounts are especially valuable in developmental biology, histology, and imaging studies where three-dimensional context provides information that isolated tissue sections may miss.
