Aging Biomarker

An aging biomarker is a measurable molecular, cellular, or physiological feature that indicates biological aging, which can differ from chronological age and help characterize changes relevant to cancer. These markers capture processes such as epigenetic modification, telomere shortening, cellular senescence, altered inflammation, and declining tissue function; researchers assess them in blood, tissues, or other biological samples using molecular and clinical assays. In cancer research, aging biomarkers can help clarify how age-related biology influences tumor development, distinguish normal aging from disease-associated change, and evaluate whether treatments alter senescence or biological age. Their use may support risk assessment, patient stratification, and more precise studies of cancer progression and therapy response.

Biomarkers in an Animal Model for Revealing Neural, Hematologic, and Behavioral Correlates of PTSD

2012

We describe a rat model of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that reveals the persistent alterations in neuroendocrine function and the delayed long-term, exaggerated fear response, characteristic of PTSD patients. The animal model and methods described here are useful for correlating biomarkers in brain nuclei, which are mechanistic but cannot be measured in patients, with biomarkers in peripheral white blood cells, which can.

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst Throughout this series of videos, natural samples were extracted and purified in search of organic compounds, called biomarkers, that can relate information on climates and environments of the past. One of the samples analyzed was sediment. Sediments accumulate over geologic time in basins, depressions in the Earth into which sediment flows through the action of fluid (water or air), movement, and gravity. Two main types...
