Liver Cancer Model

A liver cancer model is an experimental system that reproduces key features of hepatic tumors, enabling researchers to study disease development and evaluate potential treatments. Models may use cultured cancer cell lines, patient-derived organoids, xenografts, or genetically engineered animals to represent tumor cells, tissue interactions, mutations, and responses to therapeutic conditions. By comparing growth, invasion, molecular signaling, and treatment sensitivity across model types, investigators can examine mechanisms of hepatocellular carcinoma and other liver cancers. These systems support drug screening, biomarker identification, precision oncology, and translational research while helping address the limitations of studying tumors directly in patients.

2016

A surgical procedure was developed to deliver mammary tumor cells to the murine liver via portal vein injection. This model permits investigation of late stages of liver metastasis in a fully immune competent host, including tumor cell extravasation, seeding, survival, and metastatic outgrowth in the liver.

2023

This video describes the protocol for generating a patient-derived orthotopic xenograft colorectal cancer mouse model to study the progression of colorectal cancer cells in non-obese diabetic/severe combined immunodeficiency (NOD/SCID) mice. This murine model helps in understanding primary tumor growth and metastases pattern.

We describe a method to produce an animal model of liver fibrosis in the rat, and assess the degree of fibrosis by histological examination of the liver. The model can be used to study the development of liver disease as well as to test the efficacy of potential anti-fibrotic agents.
