Longitudinal Incision

A longitudinal incision is a surgical cut made along the long axis of a body region or anatomical structure, providing controlled access to underlying tissues. Surgeons create it by separating the skin and deeper layers in a lengthwise direction, then maintain exposure before closing the wound to support tissue healing. In cancer research, longitudinal incisions can provide access for tumor excision, biopsy, implantation, or tissue collection in experimental models and clinical procedures. Standardizing incision placement and closure helps researchers evaluate surgical outcomes, tumor biology, treatment effects, and postoperative recovery.

Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Metacarpal Small Incision for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel decompression with transverse carpal ligament transection is a very successful treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. The standard long-curved incision technique has become the best treatment for median nerve entrapment decompression. Here we introduce the metacarpal small incision carpal tunnel release (MSICTR) in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

Robot-assisted natural orifice specimen extraction surgery is a minimally invasive technique that combines robotic precision with natural orifice specimen extraction. A 67-year-old patient successfully underwent the procedure in 290 min, with minimal bleeding and no residual cancer. This approach minimized abdominal trauma, reduced complications, and enabled a quick recovery.
