Patient Derived Spheroids

Patient-derived spheroids are three-dimensional clusters of tumor cells grown from an individual patient’s tissue, providing a laboratory model that can retain key features of the original cancer. In culture, dissociated tumor cells aggregate under nonadherent or low-attachment conditions, where cell-cell interactions and extracellular matrix production support compact spheroid formation and gradients of oxygen and nutrients. Researchers use these models to study tumor growth, invasion, treatment response, and resistance in cancer research. Because spheroids can be exposed to chemotherapy, targeted agents, or combination treatments, they may help compare therapeutic options and support more patient-specific experimental strategies.
