Retroperitoneal Space Access

Retroperitoneal space access is a surgical technique for reaching the compartment behind the peritoneum, where the kidneys, adrenal glands, major vessels, lymph nodes, and some tumors are located. Surgeons create this potential space through an open incision or laparoscopic ports, carefully dissecting tissue planes while identifying structures such as the ureter and great vessels. In cancer research, the approach supports tissue biopsy, tumor resection, lymph-node assessment, and studies of retroperitoneal malignancies. Understanding the anatomy and access strategy can improve procedural consistency, reduce inadvertent injury, and support accurate collection of tumor and surrounding tissue for pathological and molecular analysis.

Subretinal injections are the most common technique for delivering large therapeutic agents such as proteins and viral vectors to photoreceptors and the retinal pigment epithelium. An alternative method in mice that successfully targets the subretinal space with minimal collateral damage and fast recovery times is described here.

Simple and reproducible procedures are described for making three structurally distinct collagen assemblies from a common commercially available Type I collagen monomer. Native type, fibrous long spacing or segmental long spacing collagen can be constructed by varying the conditions to which the 300 nm long and 1.4 nm diameter monomer building block is exposed.
