Charged Species Detection

Charged species detection is the identification and measurement of ions or charged molecules in a sample, a central task in analytical chemistry because charge provides a direct way to distinguish chemical components. Instruments detect these species by measuring their response to electric fields, separating them according to mass-to-charge ratio, monitoring electrical conductivity, or recording charge-transfer reactions at an electrode. Depending on the method, detection can reveal composition, concentration, molecular identity, and reaction behavior in solutions, gases, or complex mixtures. These measurements support chemical analysis, reaction monitoring, environmental testing, biomedical research, and the development of sensitive separation and sensing technologies.

Detecting Reactive Oxygen Species

2023

Reactive oxygen species are chemically active, oxygen-derived molecules capable of oxidizing other molecules. Because of their reactive nature, there are many deleterious effects associated with unchecked ROS production, including structural damage to DNA and other biological molecules. However, ROS can also be mediators of physiological signaling. There is accumulating evidence that ROS play significant roles in everything from activation of transcription factors to the mediation of...

(2016)This video demonstrates a culture-based method for identifying Vibrio species, highlighting chromogenic agar as a more accurate alternative to the commonly used thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose or TCBS agar. Chromogenic agar provides superior differentiation of Vibrio strains by detecting species-specific...

Formal Charges

In some cases, there are seemingly more than one valid Lewis structures for molecules and polyatomic ions. The concept of formal charges can be used to help predict the most appropriate Lewis structure when more than one reasonable structure exists. Calculating Formal Charge The formal charge of an atom in a molecule is the hypothetical charge the atom would have if the electrons in the bonds are evenly distributed between the atoms. Alternatively, formal charge results when from the number...
