Chemical Process Scaling

Chemical process scaling is the systematic translation of a chemical reaction or production method from laboratory experiments to pilot or industrial operation while maintaining performance, safety, and product quality. As vessel size increases, engineers evaluate how mixing, heat and mass transfer, reaction kinetics, residence time, and power input change, then adjust operating conditions and equipment design to preserve critical process parameters. In chemistry, scaling supports reliable production of pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, fuels, and materials by identifying limitations that small-scale experiments may conceal. Careful scale-up also improves reproducibility, reduces waste and energy use, and helps establish robust manufacturing processes.

2026

The scale-up of microbial fermentation processes is essential in industrial biotechnology, allowing the transition from laboratory-scale experiments to commercial-scale production while aiming to maintain product yield and quality. This process requires meticulous adjustment of equipment design, process parameters, and contamination control strategies to accommodate increasing culture volumes. At the laboratory scale, cultures are typically maintained in 1 to 10-liter glass or autoclavable...

Surface renewal is a micrometeorological method that is being used increasingly to determine energy fluxes, but its technical complexity makes it inaccessible to a broad audience. We describe the steps needed to set up and calibrate a surface renewal field station, to acquire and process data, and to correctly interpret results.

The goal of this procedure is to easily and rapidly produce a microfluidic device with customizable geometry and resistance to swelling by organic fluids for oil recovery studies. A polydimethylsiloxane mold is first generated, and then used to cast the epoxy-based device. A representative displacement study is reported.
