In Operando Measurements

In operando measurements are analytical approaches that monitor a chemical system while it performs its intended function under realistic operating conditions. Unlike measurements taken before or after an experiment, these methods collect data during an active reaction or process, linking changes in structure, composition, or electronic state to chemical performance in real time. In chemistry, researchers use spectroscopy, diffraction, microscopy, and electrochemical analysis to observe reaction intermediates, transformations, and degradation as they occur. This direct connection between material behavior and operating conditions improves mechanistic understanding and supports the design of more efficient catalysts, batteries, sensors, and other functional materials.

Fluid-cell Raman Spectroscopy (FCRS) enables in operando observations of reaction and transport phenomena during the aqueous corrosion of silicate glasses at a microscopic level, at elevated temperatures, and in real-time. Without interrupting ongoing processes, FCRS provides information about reaction mechanisms, kinetics, and transport processes.
