Ion-selective Electrode

An ion-selective electrode is an electrochemical sensor that measures the activity of a particular ion in solution, making it valuable for rapid, selective chemical analysis. Its ion-selective membrane interacts preferentially with the target ion and develops a potential relative to a reference electrode; under controlled conditions, this potential follows the Nernst relationship and can be converted into ion concentration through calibration. In chemistry, ion-selective electrodes are used to determine pH, fluoride, nitrate, potassium, calcium, and other analytes in water, biological samples, foods, and industrial solutions. They support direct measurements, titrations, and continuous monitoring with minimal sample preparation.

All-solid-state ion-selective electrodes (ASSISEs) constructed from a conductive polymer (CP) transducer provide several months of functional lifetime in liquid media. Here, we describe the fabrication and calibration process of ASSISEs in a lab-on-a-chip format. The ASSISE is demonstrated to have maintained a near-Nernstian slope profile after prolonged storage in complex biological media.

Transporters in cell membranes allow differential segregation of ions across cell membranes or cell layers and play crucial roles during tissue physiology, repair and pathology. We describe the ion-selective self-referencing microelectrode that allows the measurement of specific ion fluxes at single cells and tissues in vivo.

We describe the use of synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques to probe details of intercalation/deintercalation processes in electrode materials for Li-ion and Na-ion batteries. Both in situ and ex situ experiments are used to understand structural behavior relevant to the operation of...
