Magic Numbers

Magic numbers in chemistry are specific counts of protons or neutrons in an atomic nucleus that produce unusual nuclear stability because they complete nuclear shells. In the nuclear shell model, nucleons occupy quantized energy levels, and a filled shell creates a larger energy gap to the next available level, reducing the likelihood of nuclear excitation or decay. The classic magic numbers are 2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, and 126; nuclei with both magic proton and neutron numbers are termed doubly magic. Their study helps explain isotope stability, nuclear structure, and the formation of superheavy elements.

2025

Magical thinking encompasses the belief in assumptions that defy logical reasoning yet appear intuitively convincing. It is a common psychological phenomenon that persists across various cultural and individual contexts. While these assumptions contradict empirical evidence and scientific laws, they often serve meaningful psychological roles in promoting emotional resilience and a sense of control, especially under stress or uncertainty.Thought-Action Fusion and the Law of SimilarityA key...
